2U rack server with single Xeon E5-2650 v3

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack-mount server system supplied with one ten-core Intel Xeon processor running at 2.3 GHz. It includes 16 GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots and two 900 GB 10K SAS drives. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies and a PERC H730 RAID controller with 1 GB cache are fitted. No operating system is included.

PERC H730 RAID controller with 1 GB cache

The H730 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across the eight 2.5-inch hot-plug drive bays. Its 1 GB cache and 12 Gbps SAS interface accelerate parity calculations and rebuild times. A DVD-ROM drive is also installed. The iDRAC8 Express remote management module provides out-of-band access with Lifecycle Controller for deployment and monitoring.

Suits virtualisation hosts needing dense 2U compute

This configuration fits environments that require a single-socket server with hardware RAID and redundant power in a compact rack footprint. Buyers who need dual-processor performance, larger memory capacity beyond 16 GB, or 10 GbE networking from day one should evaluate other options. The installed drive count leaves six bays free for future expansion.

Questions about this item

What memory upgrades will the R730 need later?

The system has 24 DDR4 DIMM slots supporting 4GB to 128GB modules up to 2400MT/s, with 16GB installed and a 1536GB maximum.

What limits sustained use first on this server?

With one E5-2650 v3 10-core processor installed, the second CPU socket remains empty, capping cores at 10 and threads at 20.

How much heat and power will it draw running all day?

Dual 750W redundant power supplies feed the 2U chassis; actual draw depends on workload and the second CPU if added.
