Dense 2U storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD packs twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug bays into a 2U rack chassis, targeting organisations that need high local capacity without expanding to 4U. A single Intel Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processor at 1.9 GHz and 16 GB of DDR4 memory provide baseline compute for file serving, backup targets or secondary storage tiers.

Dual 750 W redundant supplies

Two hot-swap 750 W power supplies share the load, so a single unit failure does not interrupt operation. The H330 RAID controller manages up to twelve SAS or SATA drives with support for RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60, keeping drive electronics and airflow contained within the same 2U envelope.

Sustained throughput under load

With all twelve bays populated the system can serve sequential workloads such as backup ingest or media archives across the H330’s 12 Gbps SAS links. Four onboard 1 GbE ports and up to six PCIe 3.0 slots allow additional network or HBA cards if the workload demands more bandwidth than the default interfaces provide.

Questions about this item

How do I install the drives in the 12 hot-plug 3.5" bays and what step is often missed?

Insert each SAS or SATA drive into a bay until the lever locks; the step often missed is creating the virtual disk in the H330 controller BIOS before the OS sees the storage.

What maintenance or replacement will the 2×750W redundant power supplies need later?

Each supply is hot-swappable; if one fails, slide it out and replace it with another 750W unit while the server stays running.

What limit appears first under sustained load with the single E5-2609 v3 at 1.9GHz and 16GB DDR4?

The six-core CPU and 16GB memory ceiling will bottleneck compute-heavy workloads long before the 12-bay storage or dual 750W power supplies reach their limits.
