Two-socket 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack-mounted server system built for data-centre workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 16 cores. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight modules and a PERC H730P storage controller with 2 GB cache. Eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives and redundant 750 W power supplies complete the configuration.

Suited for dual-processor SAS deployments

This server fits environments that need two physical CPUs, SAS-based storage arrays and hardware RAID levels up to RAID 60. The quad-port network daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections, while iDRAC 9 Enterprise handles remote management. Builders who require more than two processors, additional drive bays beyond the eight 2.5-inch slots, or a different storage protocol should look at other platforms.

Storage controller dictates drive compatibility

The PERC H730P controller supports SAS and SATA drives with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Its 12 Gb/s SAS interface matches the installed 1.2 TB 10K drives and governs which future drives can be added. The 24 DDR4 slots allow memory expansion up to 3 TB, but the storage controller remains the primary factor when planning drive upgrades.

Questions about this item

How often will the PERC H730P controller's battery-backed cache need replacement?

The PERC H730P includes a 2 GB battery-backed cache module; the battery typically lasts three to five years before it should be replaced to keep write-back caching safe.

What thermal limit appears first when both Xeon Gold 6130 CPUs run at 3.7 GHz turbo continuously?

The 2.1 GHz base frequency is guaranteed within the 2U chassis cooling; sustained 3.7 GHz turbo on all 16 cores per socket will hit the package power limit first, causing the firmware to throttle clocks back toward base.

How loud are the redundant 750 W power supplies and system fans during 24/7 operation?

Dual 750 W platinum supplies and the 2U fan wall run at moderate speed under typical loads; noise rises noticeably only when both CPUs and all eight 10 K SAS drives are fully loaded for extended periods.
