Configuration and Role

This Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for compute-intensive workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6134 processors, each running at 3.2 GHz with eight cores, and 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 16 populated slots.

Fit and Limits

The platform suits database, virtualisation and high-throughput storage tasks that rely on SAS hard drives and 10 GbE networking. Buyers who need solid-state media, GPU accelerators or more than 24 DIMM slots should look elsewhere.

Deciding Specification

The system includes eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS drives managed by a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache, providing 12 Gb/s SAS connectivity and hardware RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 2.4 TB SAS drives or add SATA SSDs for the operating system?

The server ships with eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS drives on the H730P controller; you can add SATA SSDs in the same bays for a boot volume while keeping the SAS array for data.

What does the 3.2 GHz base clock deliver once the CPUs are under load?

Each Xeon Gold 6134 runs at 3.2 GHz base and can reach 3.7 GHz turbo across its 8 cores, giving 16 cores total for sustained multi-threaded workloads.

How does the 12 Gb/s SAS interface limit real-world throughput?

The H730P controller and backplane operate at 12 Gb/s SAS, so sequential throughput is capped by that link speed and the 10K spindle rate of the installed drives.
