The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server built for dense compute in a compact form factor. Four Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors deliver 48 cores at 2.3 GHz with 3.2 GHz turbo, suited to virtualisation clusters and database workloads. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 registered ECC memory populate four of forty-eight slots, leaving room for growth to 6 TB.

PERC H730P controller with eight 2.4 TB SAS drives

A Dell PERC H730P 2 GB controller manages eight 2.5-inch 10 K SAS hard drives configured for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 or 60. Hot-swap drive bays and redundant 1600 W platinum power supplies allow drive or power-module replacement without downtime. Ready Rails and a front bezel are included for standard cabinet mounting.

Quad-port X520/I350 network daughter card

Networking is provided by a daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, limiting connectivity to those speeds and media types. The system ships with iDRAC 9 Enterprise for out-of-band management, but maximum memory capacity and processor count are already reached at the factory configuration.
