Built for 2U Rack Density

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a two-socket 2U rack server designed for compute-intensive workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors, each with 12 cores running at 2.1 GHz and a 3.0 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 512 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 modules and eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS hard drives. A PERC H730P controller, quad-port network daughter card and iDRAC9 Enterprise complete the configuration.

Rail Mounting and Drive Cabling

The server includes ready rails for standard four-post rack installation and hot-swap 2.5-inch drive bays accessible from the front. The PERC H730P controller manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode with a 2 GB cache battery. Common issues arise when mixing drive firmware revisions or exceeding the controller’s 12 Gb/s SAS lane budget, which can degrade rebuild times or cause intermittent drops.

SAS Lane and Memory Slot Limits

Eight 2.5-inch bays share the backplane bandwidth provided by the H730P’s 12 Gb/s SAS interface, so aggregate throughput is bound by that link and the 10K spindle speed. The board offers 24 DDR4 slots; 16 are populated with 32 GB modules leaving eight slots free for expansion up to the 3 TB platform maximum. The LGA 3647 sockets are already fully occupied by the two installed Xeon Silver 4116 processors.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the 512GB DDR4 memory and both Xeon Silver 4116 processors are detected after powering on the R740?

Open the iDRAC9 Enterprise web interface or the system BIOS during POST; both show installed CPU count, core totals and the full 512GB DDR4 capacity across the 24 slots.

Which components ship with the server and which must be sourced separately?

The unit includes 2x Xeon Silver 4116 CPUs, 16x 32GB DDR4 modules, PERC H730P controller with battery, 8x 2.4TB SAS drives, X520/I350 quad-port NIC, iDRAC9 Enterprise, 2x 750W PSUs, rails and bezel; no extra parts are required for operation.

Which drive capacity matches the configured storage controller and bay count?

The 8-bay 2.5" chassis is populated with eight 2.4TB 10K SAS drives, matching the PERC H730P 12Gb/s controller and providing a single RAID-ready volume.
