Four-socket Xeon server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge R940 packs four Intel Xeon Gold 6134 processors into a 3U rack chassis. Each CPU delivers eight cores at 3.2 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system targets organisations running virtualisation clusters, in-memory databases or high-performance workloads that demand maximum core density per rack unit. It ships ready to deploy with rails and a front bezel included.

256 GB DDR4 with room to 6 TB

Eight 32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC modules occupy a fraction of the 48 available slots, leaving substantial headroom for memory-intensive applications. Storage is handled by a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache driving eight 600 GB 10 K SAS drives in the 2.5-inch bays. The controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. No solid-state drives are installed from the factory.

Quad-port 1 GbE and 10 GbE SFP+ networking

A daughter card combines two Intel I350 1 GbE ports with two X520 10 GbE SFP+ ports for flexible fabric connectivity. Remote management is provided by iDRAC 9 Enterprise for out-of-band control and monitoring. Dual 1600 W platinum power supplies deliver full redundancy. The platform maxes out at four processors, so buyers needing more than 32 total cores must look beyond this chassis.
