DELL PowerEdge R940 3U rack server 4x Xeon Gold 6142 2.6GHz 16-core 128GB DDR4 2x 400GB SSD

Rack server for high-density compute

The Dell PowerEdge R940 fits four Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors in a 3U chassis, delivering 64 cores and 128GB of DDR4 memory. Dual 400GB SATA SSDs and a PERC H730P controller handle boot and caching duties. Redundant 1600 W platinum supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise management complete the package. It targets databases, virtualization clusters and analytics workloads that demand maximum core count per rack unit.

Suited for multi-socket scaling.

Organizations consolidating many virtual machines or running memory-intensive databases benefit from the four-socket layout and 48 DIMM slots supporting up to 6TB. Workloads that rely on high single-thread frequency or need more than two internal solid-state drives should evaluate alternative platforms. The 2.6 GHz base clock and 3.7 GHz turbo serve throughput-oriented tasks rather than latency-sensitive ones.

Four-socket capacity is the deciding factor

With four LGA 3647 sockets populated and no room for additional CPUs, the R940 delivers its peak 64-core configuration immediately. Buyers who need room to grow beyond four processors must choose a different architecture, while those who need the density today receive a fully populated system ready for rack deployment.
