Four-socket Xeon Gold platform

The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server equipped with four Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors running at 2.6 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. Each CPU provides 16 cores, delivering a total of 64 cores for heavily threaded workloads such as virtualisation, databases and analytics. The system ships with 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory installed across 16 modules. It targets organisations that need maximum compute density in a compact rack footprint.

Memory headroom and storage controller

The platform supports up to 6 TB of DDR4 across 48 DIMM slots, leaving substantial capacity for future expansion beyond the factory 512 GB. Storage is managed by a Dell PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache, offering RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes. Two 400 GB SATA SSDs are installed in the 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis, providing a fast boot or cache tier while six bays remain open for additional SATA or SAS drives.

Network, management and power integration

A quad-port Intel X520/I350 daughter card supplies two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections for flexible network topology. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full remote management, monitoring and automation without requiring a separate KVM. Dual 1600 W platinum-efficiency power supplies operate in redundant hot-swap mode. The package includes ready rails and a front bezel for immediate rack deployment.
