Precision 5540 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 5540 is a 15.6 inch mobile workstation built for professionals who need certified graphics in a thin chassis. It ships new with Windows 10 Pro, a six-core Intel Core i7-9850H processor, 16GB of DDR4 memory and a 512GB NVMe SSD. The 1920 x 1080 IGZO4 display covers 100% sRGB and is non-touch. A dedicated Nvidia Quadro T2000 with 4GB handles 3D workloads.

Suits CAD and ISV users needing portability

This configuration suits engineers, designers and analysts who run certified ISV applications and value a 1.78kg form factor. The 97Whr battery and 130W adapter support long sessions away from a desk. Buyers who need upgradeable memory or a larger screen should consider other platforms, as the 16GB is fixed and the panel is 15.6 inches.

Quadro T2000 4GB decides fit

The single specification that decides fit is the Nvidia Quadro T2000 with 4GB of dedicated video memory. It provides certified drivers for professional 3D software where consumer GeForce cards are not validated. If your workflow relies on GPU compute or larger frame buffers, this 4GB limit may be restrictive.

Questions about this item

How is the 512GB NVMe SSD installed and what step is often missed?

The drive slides into the M.2 slot at an angle then secures with one screw; the step people miss is removing the protective thermal pad film before fastening it down.

What maintenance will the 97Whr battery need later?

Expect capacity to drop after several hundred charge cycles; the 6-cell pack is user-replaceable by removing the bottom cover and disconnecting the cable.

What limit appears first during sustained loads on the i7-9850H?

The 130W power adapter and thermal design cap sustained turbo, so clock speeds throttle before the 4.60GHz ceiling is reached for long periods.
