Precision 5820 workstation for professional compute

The Dell Precision 5820 is a mid-tower desktop built around an Intel Xeon W-2123 processor with four cores running at 3.6 GHz and a 3.9 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 2666 registered ECC memory in four 32 GB modules and a 500 GB NVMe solid-state drive. An Nvidia Quadro P4000 graphics card with 8 GB of GDDR5 memory and four DisplayPort outputs handles visual workloads, while Windows 11 Pro provides the operating environment.

950 W Gold supply and quiet tower cooling

A Dell 950 watt 80 Plus Gold certified power supply rated at 90 percent efficiency delivers stable power to the CPU, GPU and memory subsystem. The mid-tower chassis uses internal airflow paths to move heat away from the Xeon processor and Quadro card without excessive fan noise during typical workstation tasks. Integrated Intel i219 gigabit Ethernet and Realtek ALC3234 high-definition audio complete the onboard I/O.

LGA 2066 platform with room to expand

The LGA 2066 socket motherboard offers eight DDR4 slots, allowing the installed 128 GB to be doubled to the platform maximum of 256 GB when larger datasets demand it. Four DisplayPort connectors on the Quadro P4000 drive multi-monitor setups directly from the graphics card. The 500 GB NVMe boot drive leaves additional M.2 and drive bays open for secondary storage, while the 950 watt supply provides headroom for further GPU or add-in card upgrades.

Questions about this item

How do I install the four 32GB DDR4 2666MHz Registered ECC modules into the eight available slots?

Populate the four modules into the matched channel pairs indicated on the motherboard, using the same capacity per channel; the common mistake is mixing registered ECC with unbuffered DIMMs or leaving a channel unbalanced.

What maintenance will the 950 Watt 80 Plus Gold power supply need after several years of heavy workloads?

Clean dust from the intake and exhaust vents annually; replace the unit if fan noise increases or voltages drift under sustained load, as capacitors age silently.

At what point does the Quadro P4000 8GB GDDR5 frame buffer become the bottleneck during extended rendering sessions?

When scene assets exceed the 8GB VRAM limit, the driver spills to system memory over the PCIe bus, causing noticeable frame-time spikes.
