Workstation for Demanding Applications

The Dell Precision 5820 Tower is a new mid-tower workstation built around an Intel Xeon W-2123 four-core processor running at 3.6 GHz with a 3.9 GHz turbo frequency. It includes 32 GB of DDR4 2666 registered ECC memory across eight slots and a 1 TB PCIe NVMe solid-state drive. An Nvidia Quadro P5000 graphics card with 16 GB of GDDR5X memory provides four DisplayPort outputs for multi-monitor setups. Windows 11 Pro is pre-installed.

Upgrade From Consumer Desktops

This system replaces standard consumer desktops when workloads require error-correcting memory, certified professional graphics drivers, and a 950 W 80 Plus Gold power supply. The jump is worth it for users who need registered ECC RAM stability and ISV-certified Quadro drivers for CAD, 3D rendering or scientific computing. Builders who need more than 256 GB of memory or a second full-size graphics card will find the platform limiting.

LGA 2066 Platform Constraints

The LGA 2066 socket and DDR4 2666 memory ceiling define the practical upgrade boundary for this workstation. CPU upgrades are restricted to compatible Xeon W or Core X series processors supported by the motherboard firmware. Memory cannot exceed 256 GB total or 2666 MHz speed. The Quadro P5000 connects via a standard PCIe slot, but the 950 W power supply sets a hard limit on total graphics power draw.

Questions about this item

Will the 950 W power supply fit the Precision 5820 mid-tower chassis?

The 950 W 80 Plus Gold unit is built for the Precision 5820 mid-tower, so it mounts directly in the standard PSU bay without adapters.

How do I install the Quadro P5000, and what step is often missed?

Seat the card in the primary PCIe x16 slot, then connect both 8-pin power cables from the 950 W supply — forgetting the second cable is the common error.

What memory upgrades does the 8-slot DDR4 2666 board support later?

You can populate the remaining four slots with DDR4 2666 registered ECC modules up to 256 GB total capacity.
