New Dell Precision 7740 mobile workstation

This 2019 Dell Precision 7740 is a new 17.3-inch mobile workstation. It runs an Intel Core i7-9850H six-core processor with a 4.60 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 32GB memory and 768GB total SSD storage across a 512GB and a 256GB drive. An NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 dedicated GPU drives the 1920 x 1080 FHD non-touch display. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed.

Suits ISV-certified workflows.

Engineers and analysts running ISV-certified applications gain from the Quadro RTX 3000 and six-core CPU. The 17.3-inch chassis at 6.79 lbs stays desk-bound for most users. Buyers who need a lighter device for daily commuting or who want a touchscreen should look elsewhere. The 32GB memory ceiling also limits very large dataset work.

Quadro RTX 3000 6 GB GPU decides fit

The NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 dedicated graphics card is the specification that determines suitability. Its certified drivers enable stable performance in CAD, CAE and visualisation workloads. If your software stack relies on Quadro certification, this GPU meets that requirement. If it does not, a consumer GPU may offer more raw throughput for less cost.

Questions about this item

How loud and hot does the i7-9850H get when the Precision 7740 runs all day?

The six-core i7-9850H reaches a 4.6 GHz turbo frequency; Dell's Precision cooling is designed to manage that sustained load in the 17.3" chassis.

Which ports and power does the Precision 7740 need to start working out of the box?

It ships with its power adapter port and includes Thunderbolt 3 Type-C, HDMI 2.0, Mini DisplayPort 1.4, RJ-45, USB 3.1 Gen 1, SD card reader and a headset jack.

Will my older USB 3.0 drives and HDMI 1.4 monitor work with this 7740?

Yes — USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports are backward-compatible with USB 3.0 devices, and the HDMI 2.0 output drives HDMI 1.4 displays at their native resolution.
