Mobile workstation for CAD and simulation

The Dell Precision 7760 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built around an Intel Core i5-11400H six-core processor with a 4.6 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 16 GB of memory and a 1 TB solid-state drive running Windows 11 Pro. The dedicated NVIDIA T1200 graphics card drives the 1920 x 1080 non-touch display for professional 3D and visualisation workloads.

Thermals and acoustics at the desk

A dual-fan cooling system manages heat from the 45-watt CPU and discrete GPU while keeping noise low during typical office tasks such as modelling, documentation and video calls. The chassis draws cool air through the bottom vents and exhausts it at the rear, allowing sustained clock speeds without fan rattle. Power delivery uses the supplied adapter through the dedicated barrel connector.

Sustained load behaviour over hours

Under continuous multi-core rendering or simulation the processor settles to its base 2.9 GHz once thermal limits are reached, preventing throttling spikes. Surface temperatures on the keyboard deck and underside rise noticeably, so a hard flat surface is advisable for long runs. Battery life drops sharply under full load, making mains power essential for extended compute sessions.

Questions about this item

How do I install the second Thunderbolt 4 Type-C cable and what step do people miss?

Connect the cable to one of the two Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports on the rear; the step often missed is using a certified Thunderbolt 4 cable so the full 40 Gbps link negotiates.

Which component will need replacement first after heavy daily use?

The internal lithium-ion battery will degrade before the soldered memory or the 1 TB SSD, so plan a battery swap once run-time drops below your workflow needs.

What thermal limit appears first during a sustained all-core workload?

The 45 W CPU power ceiling is reached first; the six-core i5-11400H throttles from 4.6 GHz to its 2.9 GHz base once the cooling solution saturates.
