Portable DVD player with HD upconversion

The Emerson ED-8000 plays DVD, DVD+R/RW, CD and CD-R/RW discs and upconverts standard-definition video to near-HD resolution. A single HDMI cable carries the digital signal to an HDTV, while composite, component, coaxial digital audio and RCA stereo outputs provide flexible analogue connections. It also handles MPEG-1, MPEG-2, JPG and MP3 files. The slim black chassis measures 14.20 x 6.90 x 1.50 inches and weighs 2.75 lbs.

Check your TV inputs and disc library

Verify that your display has a free HDMI port or the legacy composite and component sockets the player shares. Confirm the discs you intend to watch are DVD, DVD+R/RW, CD or CD-R/RW, as other formats are not supported. The unit runs on AC 110240V mains power, so ensure a suitable outlet is available near the viewing position. No network or streaming capability is included.

Ideal for DVD collectors with an HDTV

This player suits viewers who want to watch an existing library of DVDs and CDs on a modern HDTV with a simple one-cable HDMI hookup. It is not for buyers who want more storage, built-in streaming apps, Blu-ray playback, 4K output or wireless connectivity. Portable use away from mains power is not supported.

Questions about this item

Does the ED-8000 come with an HDMI cable in the box?

The package contains the player, a remote control, an A/V cable and the user manual; an HDMI cable is not included and must be purchased separately.

Should I use the HDMI output or the component outputs for my HDTV?

The HDMI connection carries upconverted digital video and audio in a single cable, while component uses three video plus two audio cables; HDMI is the simpler route for an HDTV.

What does HD upconversion actually do for a standard DVD on my HDTV?

The player scales the disc's 480i picture toward 720p or 1080i resolution over HDMI, so the image fills an HD screen more cleanly than a plain 480i signal.
