7" LCD DVD Boombox with ATSC TV

The Emerson EDL-2870-BK is a portable boombox that combines a 7" LCD screen with DVD playback and a built-in digital ATSC tuner for free over-the-air HD television. It also handles CD, MP3, AM/FM radio, USB drives, and SD/SDHC cards. Bluetooth streaming lets you play audio from a phone or tablet. Twin full-range drivers deliver 5W RMS output.

Digital ATSC tuner for free HD TV

The single specification that decides suitability is the integrated ATSC television tuner, which receives broadcast channels without a cable subscription or internet connection. If you only need disc playback or radio, a simpler device will do. This tuner makes the unit a self-contained portable TV and DVD player for travel, kitchen, or outdoor use.

Runs on AC, 12 V DC, or eight C cells

The boombox ships with an AC 120 V adapter, a 12 V DC car cord, and a battery compartment for eight C batteries, so it works at home, in a vehicle, or away from power outlets. A 3.5 mm headphone jack and AUX input let you listen privately or connect external sources. Composite A/V output can feed a larger display, and a microphone input supports karaoke or PA use.

Questions about this item

How loud does the 5W RMS output get in a typical room?

The twin full-range drivers deliver 5W RMS, which is enough for personal listening or a small bedroom but will not fill a large living area at high volume.

What does the ATSC tuner actually receive without a subscription?

The built-in ATSC tuner picks up free over-the-air HD television broadcasts; no cable or satellite service is required.

Will the 15.50 x 9.75 x 6.60 inch cabinet fit on a standard shelf?

At 15.50 inches wide, 9.75 inches deep and 6.60 inches high it fits most bookshelf depths, but measure your shelf clearance before buying.
