Connect U.2 NVMe to 12G Mini-SAS

This 0.5 metre adapter cable links a U.2 NVMe SSD with an SFF-8639 port to a host card or motherboard header using an SFF-8643 Mini-SAS connector. It targets builders adding high-speed NVMe storage to platforms lacking a native U.2 socket. The cable also includes a 15-pin SATA power receptacle to supply the drive. It does not suit systems without a free Mini-SAS port or a spare SATA power lead.

Passive design draws no extra power

The assembly uses a braided sleeve and cloth-tape strain relief on both data connectors. No active circuitry sits on the cable, so it adds no heat or noise beyond the drive and host card themselves. Power for the SSD passes straight through from the SATA connector to the SFF-8639 plug. The 50 cm length keeps routing tidy inside compact chassis.

SATA power lead enables drive operation

The bundled 15-pin SATA receptacle is mandatory; the U.2 drive cannot start without 3.3 V and 12 V supplied from the power supply. No software, drivers or mounting hardware are included. An M.2 NVMe SSD would need a separate M.2-to-U.2 adapter, which is not part of this package.

Questions about this item

How do I connect the SFF-8643 end to my RAID card and the U.2 SFF-8639 end to my NVMe SSD?

Plug the 36-pin HD Mini-SAS SFF-8643 male connector into the RAID or HBA card, attach the 68-pin U.2 SFF-8639 male connector to the U.2 NVMe SSD, then connect the 15-pin SATA power receptacle to a PSU SATA cable; the step often missed is forgetting the SATA power link, which leaves the drive unpowered.

What parts of this adapter cable might wear out and need replacing first?

The braided-sleeve jacket and cloth-tape strain relief on both the SFF-8643 and SFF-8639 connectors protect the 0.5 m cable, but repeated mating cycles can fatigue the latch on the 36-pin plug and the SATA power receptacle, so those ends are the likeliest items to replace.

At what point does the 12 Gb/s SAS link become the bottleneck during sustained NVMe SSD transfers?

The adapter carries a PCIe 3.0 x4 (four-lane) connection over the 12 Gb/s Mini-SAS HD interface, so the 12 Gb/s electrical limit is reached before the drive’s native NVMe throughput, capping sustained sequential performance at the link rate.
