Portable USB DAC with dual CS43198 chips

The FiiO KA5 is a portable USB DAC and headphone amplifier built around dual CS43198 chips. It decodes PCM up to 32 bit / 768 kHz and DSD up to DSD256. The unit weighs 19 g and fits in a pocket for desktop or mobile listening.

Alloy body with glass panels and OLED display

An alloy chassis with front and rear glass panels houses a bright white OLED screen that shows playback status and settings. On-device volume control adjusts output without touching the source. Outputs include 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced connectors plus an optical S/PDIF output for digital pass-through.

Upgrades basic dongles or built-in audio

The balanced output delivers 265 mW into 32 ohms while single-ended provides 122 mW, with 0.3 ohm output impedance suited to low-impedance IEMs. THD measures .00037 %. Buyers who need more power for high-impedance headphones or a desktop form factor with larger controls should consider other models.

Questions about this item

What does the USB interface limit the KA5 to in practice?

The USB connection carries audio up to DSD256 and PCM 32-bit 768 kHz, which are the maximum decode rates the dual CS43198 chips support.

What physical clearance does the KA5 need to fit?

The alloy body with front and rear glass weighs 19 g and presents 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced jacks, so it needs only the space of a large USB dongle.

How is the KA5 installed and what step do people miss?

Plug it into a USB port, then use the on-device volume control and OLED screen to set gain before playing; many forget to adjust volume on the dongle itself.
