Product type and audience

The Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 is a duplex document scanner designed for offices and home workers who need to digitise paper quickly. It connects by USB or Wi-Fi and creates searchable PDFs with a single button press. The device runs on AC power between 100 and 240 volts at 50 or 60 Hz and supports Windows operating systems. It is not suited for buyers who require macOS or Linux driver support, or for those needing a flatbed for bound originals.

Throughput and document handling

The scanner feeds up to 25 double-sided pages per minute using a CIS sensor with LED illumination at 600 by 600 dpi optical resolution. Documents up to 5.80 inches or 148.00 mm in length are captured in Best Mode; longer pages switch to Better Mode and can exceed A4 length, though Excellent Mode is unavailable for extended sheets. Very high-volume environments that demand faster throughput or higher daily duty cycles will find the speed ceiling restrictive.

Bundled software and connectivity impact

Included Nuance Power PDF and Nuance PDF Converter provide PDF creation, editing and conversion tools without separate licences. ScanSnap Cloud enables direct uploads to selected cloud services without a computer or mobile device, while the Wi-Fi radio also allows scanning straight to iOS, Android or Kindle Fire hardware. A USB 3.0 port is fitted, but some systems only recognise the scanner on a USB 2.0 connection, so a fallback cable may be necessary.

Questions about this item

Will the iX500 work with a desktop that only has USB 2.0 ports?

Yes, the scanner connects via USB 3.0 but the manufacturer notes that some computers do not recognise it on a USB 3.0 port and recommends using a USB 2.0 port instead.

How can I verify the 600 x 600 dpi optical resolution is producing sharp scans?

Scan a test page at the highest quality setting and check that text at small point sizes remains crisp and legible in the resulting searchable PDF.

Does the box include a Wi-Fi setup cable or must I buy one separately?

The scanner supports wireless scanning to iOS, Android and Kindle Fire devices and includes a USB cable for wired connection; no separate Wi-Fi cable is required.
