Protective varnish for canvas prints

Hahnemuhle Varnish Satin is a water-based coating designed for inkjet canvas prints. It comes as a ready-to-use mixture that rolls directly onto the surface with a foam roller. The varnish adds a satin finish while increasing colour vibrancy and providing UV protection for display longevity.

Sustained protection against environmental damage

The coating creates a water-resistant barrier that guards canvases against humidity-induced fungal growth and cracking. Lightfastness is increased so prints resist fading during extended exposure to light. The clear layer preserves the original texture and colour accuracy of pigment and ultrachrome inks over time.

Upgrade from uncoated or basic spray protection

This varnish replaces leaving canvas prints unprotected or using simple fixative sprays that lack water resistance. The jump is worth it when prints are handled frequently, displayed without glass, or stored in variable humidity where fungal growth and cracking become real risks.

Questions about this item

Does the varnish emit strong fumes or heat while it cures on a canvas that will hang in a living room?

The water-based formula dries to the touch in about 30 minutes and leaves a clear, satin coating without noticeable odour or heat buildup.

What tools do I need before I can start coating my inkjet canvas prints?

A foam roller is all that is required; the varnish arrives as a ready-to-use mixture so no thinning or mixing equipment is necessary.

Will this satin varnish change the look of pigment prints I made on an older large-format printer?

It deepens blacks and widens the colour gamut of pigment and ultrachrome inks while adding water resistance and UV protection.
