Product identity

This is a new HGST Travelstar 5K500.B laptop internal hard drive with 500GB capacity, 5400 RPM spindle speed, 8MB cache and a SATA 3.0Gb/s interface in a 2.5 inch bare-drive form factor. It is built for notebook PCs, external enclosures, gaming consoles and similar mobile applications where low power consumption and halogen-free materials are priorities.

Who it suits

It suits users upgrading or replacing a 2.5 inch SATA drive in a laptop, console or external case who want a balance of capacity, ruggedness and low power draw with enhanced availability for around-the-clock access in lighter transaction workloads. It does not suit builds that need a faster spindle speed, larger cache or a different interface than SATA 3.0Gb/s.

Deciding specification

The single specification that decides fit is the SATA 3.0Gb/s interface combined with the 2.5 inch form factor; the drive will only work in systems that provide a matching SATA connection and physical bay.

Questions about this item

Does the SATA 3.0Gb/s interface limit the 5400 RPM drive's real-world throughput?

The SATA 3.0Gb/s link caps the maximum burst transfer rate at 300 MB/s, while the 5400 RPM mechanism with 8MB cache typically delivers sustained reads well below that ceiling.

What physical space and mounting does the 2.5-inch form factor require?

The drive measures 2.5 inches wide and fits standard laptop bays and external enclosures designed for 2.5-inch SATA drives.

How is the bare drive installed in a laptop, and what step is often missed?

Slide the bare drive into the SATA connector, secure it with the caddy or screws, then initialise and format the new volume in the operating system before use.
