Hybrid drive for laptop upgrades

The Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS combines a 500GB 7200 RPM platter with 4GB of solid-state memory to accelerate boot and application loading. It targets users who want faster responsiveness than a standard hard drive without sacrificing total capacity. The SATA 3.0Gb/s interface with NCQ fits any 2.5-inch bay that accepts a 9.5mm drive.

Thermals and power in daily use

Low heat and vibration are specified, allowing quiet operation inside thin chassis. The 7200 RPM spindle and 32MB cache deliver an average write time of 13ms while Adaptive Memory technology manages the flash portion to reduce seek activity. Power draw remains within typical 2.5-inch SATA limits for laptop cooling systems.

Build and connector implications

Bare-drive packaging means no bracket, screws or cables are included; the installer must reuse existing hardware. Dimensions of 100.30mm length and 69.75mm width match the standard 2.5-inch footprint for direct replacement. The drive is end-of-sale with no manufacturer warranty, so buyers who need long-term vendor support should consider current-production alternatives.

Questions about this item

How do I install this 2.5" SATA hybrid drive in my laptop, and what step is often missed?

Mount the 9.5 mm high drive in the 2.5" bay, connect the SATA 3.0Gb/s data and power cables, then enable AHCI in BIOS so NCQ and the 4 GB NAND cache work correctly.

What part of this ST95005620AS will wear out first and need replacement?

The 7200 RPM mechanical platters and head actuator accumulate wear over time; the 4 GB solid-state cache has no moving parts but the magnetic media determines the drive's usable life.

What performance limit appears first during sustained heavy writes on this hybrid drive?

After the 4 GB NAND cache fills, write speed drops to the 7200 RPM magnetic layer with its 13 ms average write time, becoming the bottleneck.
