320 GB 7200 RPM SATA laptop drive

The HGST 0A78743 is a 2.5-inch internal hard drive with a 7 mm height and 320 GB capacity. It spins at 7200 RPM and provides a 16 MB cache over a SATA 3.0 Gb/s interface. The bare drive is designed as a direct replacement for standard 9.5 mm drives in notebook PCs and compact systems.

Suits thin laptops needing faster mechanical storage

Builders upgrading a 7 mm bay in a notebook or small external enclosure will benefit from the 7200 RPM speed and single-platter design. Buyers who want more storage capacity or a solid-state drive for silent operation should look at something else.

Simple drop-in installation for 2.5-inch SATA bays

The drive fits any 2.5-inch SATA slot with 7 mm clearance and uses standard SATA data and power connectors. No special tools or drivers are required. The main issue occurs when a chassis only accepts 9.5 mm drives, leaving the thinner unit loose without a spacer.

Questions about this item

Does my laptop need a specific SATA version to use this 3.0Gb/s drive?

The drive uses the SATA 3.0Gb/s interface and is backward compatible with earlier SATA revisions, so it will work in any laptop that accepts a 2.5-inch SATA drive.

Will this 7mm drive fit in the bay that currently holds a 9.5mm hard drive?

Yes, the 7mm height is designed as a direct replacement for standard 9.5mm drives; most laptops include a spacer or the caddy absorbs the difference.

How can I verify the drive is running at 7200 RPM after installation?

Check the model number 0A78743 in the BIOS or a system-information tool; the drive identifies itself as a 7200 RPM Travelstar Z7K320 unit.
