Product identity and target user

The Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS is a 2.5 inch internal hard drive with 500GB capacity, 7200 RPM spindle speed and a 16MB cache. It connects through a SATA 3.0Gb/s interface and fits the standard 9.5mm laptop bay. The unit is sold as a bare drive in new condition.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This drive suits owners of older laptops or small-form-factor systems that need a direct 2.5 inch SATA replacement with 7200 RPM performance. Buyers who want more storage capacity or a solid-state interface should look elsewhere. Systems that require a thinner 7mm drive height or a larger 3.5 inch form factor cannot use this model.

Deciding specification

The 9.5mm height is the single specification that determines whether this drive fits the target bay. Many modern ultrabooks and compact enclosures only accept 7mm drives, so verifying the chassis clearance before purchase is essential.

Questions about this item

Does the ST9500420AS arrive as a bare drive or with cables and brackets included?

The unit is supplied as a bare 2.5" drive only; no SATA cable, mounting bracket, screws or adapter are included and must be sourced separately.

Should I choose the 500GB 7200 RPM model or a lower-capacity alternative for my laptop?

The 500GB capacity combined with 7200 RPM and 16MB cache gives the highest performance in this series; select it when you need maximum space and speed in a 9.5mm bay.

What does the 3.0Gb/s SATA rating mean for real-world throughput in a laptop?

The SATA 3.0Gb/s interface caps burst transfer at 3.0Gb/s; sustained read and write speeds will be lower and depend on the 7200 RPM platters and 16MB cache in actual use.
