Travelstar 5K100 40GB notebook drive

The HGST HTS541040G9SA00 is a 2.5-inch laptop internal hard drive with 40GB capacity and 5400 RPM spindle speed. It connects through a SATA 1.5Gb/s interface and includes 8MB cache. The bare-drive unit is built for low power consumption and rated for 600,000 load/unload cycles. Average seek time is 12ms and average latency is 5.5ms.

Upgrade from smaller or failed 2.5-inch SATA drives

This drive replaces an original 2.5-inch SATA drive that has failed or offers less than 40GB of space. The jump is worth it when the system only supports SATA 1.5Gb/s and a larger modern drive would not negotiate down to that speed. It also suits legacy laptops whose BIOS cannot address capacities above the 40GB limit.

Simple 2.5-inch SATA swap in most notebooks

Installation requires only a standard 2.5-inch drive bay and a SATA data plus power connector. The bare drive ships without brackets, screws or adapter cables, so reuse the original mounting hardware. The only common issue is a BIOS that refuses to recognise the drive because its controller does not support the Travelstar 5K100 geometry.
