Product identity

The HGST Travelstar 5K160 is a 40GB 2.5-inch laptop hard drive with a SATA 1.5Gb/s interface. It spins at 5400 RPM and carries 8MB of cache for basic mobile storage tasks.

Capacity and headroom

The 40GB capacity suits legacy operating systems, light document archives or a secondary data partition. Average seek time is 11ms and average latency is 5.5ms, so large file batches or modern multitasking will quickly saturate the drive.

Thermals noise and power

Perpendicular magnetic recording enables best-in-class low-power utilisation for extended battery life. The bare drive runs quietly in typical notebook chassis with no active cooling required.

Questions about this item

Will the SATA 1.5Gb/s interface on this 2.5" drive work with an older laptop that only supports SATA 1.5Gb/s?

Yes, the drive uses a native SATA 1.5Gb/s interface so it will communicate at full speed with a laptop limited to that revision.

How can I verify the drive is performing correctly after installation?

Run a SMART self-test and confirm the drive reports 5400 RPM, 8MB cache and an average seek time near 11ms.

The listing says Bare Drive — does that mean I only get the drive itself with no cables, brackets or screws?

Correct, Bare Drive packaging includes only the 2.5" hard drive; any SATA data cable, power adapter or mounting hardware must be sourced separately.
