Product identity

The HGST Travelstar Z7K500 is a 250 GB 2.5-inch internal hard drive built for laptops and other slim devices. It spins at 7200 rpm with a 32 MB cache and connects through a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface. The 7 mm height fits thin chassis designs that cannot accept standard 9.5 mm drives.

Who it suits and who it does not

This drive suits builders upgrading a notebook, external enclosure or console that accepts a 7 mm SATA drive and wants mechanical speed at 250 GB capacity. Buyers who need more storage than 250 GB should look at larger capacities in the same series. Users whose systems require a 9.5 mm drive height or a non-SATA interface cannot use this model.

Deciding specification

The 7 mm z-height is the single specification that decides fitment. If the target bay only accepts 9.5 mm drives, this unit will not install. When the bay accepts 7 mm drives, the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and 7200 rpm spindle deliver the highest mechanical performance available in this form factor.

Questions about this item

Which capacity in the Z7K500 range suits a laptop upgrade?

The series spans 250 GB to 500 GB; this model provides 250 GB in a 7 mm 2.5" form factor that fits most notebook bays.

What does the 7200 rpm spindle speed deliver in daily use?

The platters spin at 7200 revolutions per minute, giving quicker file opens and boot times than slower-spinning laptop drives.

How does the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface affect real-world throughput?

The 6.0 Gb/s SATA link caps the drive’s maximum transfer rate at the SATA III ceiling, so sustained reads and writes top out at the interface limit.
