What this adapter does

This four-pack of gray USB-C to USB-A adapters lets you connect Type-C devices to standard USB-A ports. Each unit supports data transfer up to 5 Gbps and standard charging at 5 V / 2.1 A. They also work with USB-C headphones for audio playback and in-line controls.

Who should buy them and who should not

The adapters suit anyone needing to link USB-C phones, tablets, drives or headphones to legacy USB-A sockets on laptops, desktops or car systems. Buyers who require video output, MagSafe charging or a stable connection through a USB-C hub should look elsewhere because those functions are not supported.

Deciding specification

The key figure is the 5 Gbps data rate combined with the charging profiles of 9 V / 2.4 A, 15 V / 3 A and 20 V / 3 A. If your device needs more bandwidth or a different power contract, this adapter will not meet the requirement.

Questions about this item

Will the 56 kΩ resistor inside each HOWJIM A172 adapter need replacement over time?

The built-in 56 kΩ resistor is a fixed component soldered to the PCB and is not user-replaceable; the adapter itself requires no scheduled maintenance.

What throughput ceiling will I hit first when copying large files continuously through the A172?

The USB 3.0 male connector limits sustained transfer to 5 Gbps, so that interface ceiling appears before any thermal throttle.

How warm do the gray aluminum adapters get and how much power do they draw when left plugged in all day?

The aluminum shell stays near ambient during idle use; under load it draws only the negotiated 5 V/2.1 A or fast-charge profiles up to 20 V/3 A with no fan or audible noise.
