Connector shape is not speed

USB-A and USB-C describe the plug shape, not the speed. A USB-C plug can carry only USB 2.0, which runs at 480 Mbit/s, or USB 3.x at 5 or 10 Gbit/s, depending on the device and cable. A shape adapter, such as C to A, passes whatever the weakest part supports, so a slow cable still limits a fast drive. Adapters from USB-A female to USB-C male let older accessories use new ports, and C female to A male lets new devices use older ports. Check the listed USB version if you plan to connect a fast drive.

Dongles that add a function

Some adapters contain a chip and add a function rather than reshape a plug. A USB to Ethernet dongle needs a driver and a USB 3.0 port to reach Gigabit speed. A USB to SATA cable lets a 2.5-inch drive connect externally, and 3.5-inch drives also need their own power supply. A USB audio adapter adds a sound card with a headphone jack. Multi-packs of simple adapters suit labs and offices that need spares.

Questions about USB Adapter Cables, Dongles and Converters

Is a USB-C to USB-A adapter slower than a direct connection?
Not by itself. It passes the speed of the slowest element in the chain, so a USB 3.0 adapter with a USB 3.0 drive reaches full speed, while a USB 2.0 adapter or cable limits it to USB 2.0 speed.
Why is my USB to Ethernet adapter not detected?
Most need a driver, which many operating systems include but some do not. Install the driver for the adapter's chipset, try a USB 3.0 port directly on the computer instead of a hub, and test with a different Ethernet cable.
Is it safe to use a male-to-male USB cable between two computers?
No. A plain male-to-male USB-A cable is not part of the USB standard and can connect the power lines of two computers together. For file transfer between computers, use a USB data-transfer cable that has a bridge chip.
