Eight-port KVM switch manages up to 256 servers from one console with 1280 x 1024 video and on-screen display
The HP AF616A connects up to eight servers to a single keyboard, monitor and mouse console. It supports video resolution of 1280 x 1024 and uses D-Sub, USB and PS/2 interfaces for computer connections. An on-screen display provides intuitive menus for selecting attached systems. The unit measures 11.75" x 20.5" x 7.75" and weighs 13.2 lbs.
As a non-powered switching device, the unit generates no measurable heat and produces no fan noise during normal use. It draws negligible power from the connected server ports to operate the OSD and port-selection logic. There are no thermal constraints to consider when installing the switch in a standard rack environment.
The switch eliminates the need for a dedicated keyboard, monitor and mouse at every server, reducing hardware cost and rack space. Cascading compatible units can expand management to 256 computers from one console. The upgrade is worthwhile when consolidating control of multiple legacy servers that use VGA and PS/2 or USB peripherals. It does not suit installations requiring digital video inputs or remote IP access.

Attach each server's video, keyboard and mouse cables to the matching ports on the rear of the switch, then use the on-screen display to assign a unique name to every port so the OSD menu shows the correct server when you switch.
The front-panel buttons and the internal switching relays that route the video and USB signals are the components most likely to wear out after repeated daily switching between the eight connected servers.
The switch supports a maximum of 1280 x 1024; pushing a higher resolution from any connected server will result in a blank or distorted image on the console monitor.
