HP LTO-7 Ultrium cartridge

The HP C7977A is a 15 TB LTO-7 Ultrium data cartridge built for long-term archival and backup workflows. It suits IT teams and small-business operators who need offline, air-gapped copies of critical datasets.

Sustained streaming performance

The tape delivers a native read speed of 700 MB/s and supports 2.5:1 compression, giving higher effective throughput when data is compressible. Continuous streaming at this rate avoids the slowdown seen in random-access media during extended write sessions.

Compatibility checks before ordering

Verify that your library or standalone drive supports LTO-7 Ultrium media and can handle a 3,150 ft tape length. Confirm the drive firmware is current and that your backup software recognises the cartridge format for append and overwrite operations.

Questions about this item

Does the cartridge generate heat or noise during continuous backup operations?

The tape cartridge itself is passive; heat and noise come from the LTO-7 drive mechanism, not the media.

What drive hardware is required to write to this 15 TB cartridge?

An LTO-7 Ultrium tape drive is required to read and write this cartridge.

Can this cartridge be read in an older LTO-5 drive I still use?

LTO-7 drives read LTO-5 and LTO-6 cartridges, but an LTO-5 drive cannot read this LTO-7 cartridge.
