Quantum LTO Ultrium 8 Cartridge

This Quantum MR-L8MQN-02 cartridge provides LTO Ultrium 8 backup media for organisations that require high-capacity tape storage. It is designed for data centres and IT departments managing long-term retention and archival workloads. The single pack delivers a native capacity of 12TB with a compressed capacity of 30TB.

Sustained write performance

LTO Ultrium 8 media maintains consistent throughput during extended backup windows, avoiding the speed drops seen in shorter bursts. The tape format supports streaming writes that keep the drive operating at its rated speed across the full 12TB native length. This behaviour reduces the risk of shoe-shining and ensures predictable job completion times.

WORM capability decides fit

The cartridge uses write-once-read-many technology, so data cannot be overwritten or erased after it is written. This makes the media suitable for compliance archives and legal hold requirements where immutability is mandatory. It is not suitable for environments that need reusable scratch tapes for daily rotation.

Questions about this item

Does the LTO Ultrium 8 cartridge generate heat or noise during extended backup sessions?

The cartridge itself is passive media with no moving parts, so it produces no heat or noise; any sound or warmth comes from the tape drive mechanism reading or writing the tape.

What drive hardware is required to write data onto this Quantum MR-L8MQN-02 cartridge?

You need an LTO-8 compatible tape drive that supports the Ultrium 8 format; the cartridge cannot be used with earlier LTO generations or non-LTO drives.

Can this Ultrium 8 cartridge be read in an LTO-7 drive I already own?

No, LTO-7 drives cannot read Ultrium 8 media; the cartridge requires an LTO-8 or later drive for both writing and reading.
