Ready for business travel

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch HD laptop built around a dual-core Intel Core i5-6300U processor running at 2.40 GHz with a turbo frequency of 3.00 GHz. It ships with 8GB of DDR3 memory and a new 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe solid-state drive. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit comes pre-installed on the silver chassis.

Build around the essentials

Integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 handles the 1366 x 768 non-touch display without a discrete GPU. Two memory slots allow expansion up to 32 GB when workloads demand more headroom. The M.2 NVMe drive leaves no 2.5 inch bay occupied, keeping the internal layout clean for service or future storage changes.

Steps up from slower storage

Replacing a traditional hard drive with the NVMe PCIe SSD cuts boot and application load times for office suites and web apps. The 6th generation dual-core CPU handles typical productivity tasks, but buyers who need more cores for heavy multitasking or modern creative workloads should consider a higher-tier platform.

Questions about this item

Does the 1366 x 768 display and Intel HD Graphics 520 throttle under sustained load?

The dual-core i5-6300U at 2.40 GHz with 3.00 GHz turbo can hit thermal limits on extended heavy tasks, causing clock speeds to drop until the chassis cools.

How loud and hot does the EliteBook 840 G3 get when running all day?

Fan noise rises noticeably during long CPU-intensive sessions; the base stays warm and the keyboard deck becomes warm to the touch after several hours.

What memory must already be installed for the laptop to boot?

The unit ships with 8 GB of DDR3 fitted in one of the two slots, so it works immediately without adding any modules.
