What this laptop is

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch HD laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-6200U dual-core processor running at 2.30 GHz with a 2.80 GHz turbo frequency. It comes equipped with 16GB of DDR3 memory across two slots and a new 1TB 2.5 inch SATA SSD. No operating system is installed.

Who it suits and who it does not

This unit suits buyers who need a 14 inch business laptop with 16GB of memory and a large SATA solid-state drive ready for their own operating system installation. It does not suit buyers who want a touchscreen display, a higher resolution panel, or a discrete graphics processor. It also does not suit anyone who requires the laptop to ship with an operating system pre-loaded.

Deciding specification

The 1TB 2.5 inch SATA SSD is the single specification that decides fit; it sets the total storage capacity and the drive interface, so anyone needing a different capacity or a different drive interface must choose a different unit.

Questions about this item

What size and interface does the 1TB drive use so I can confirm it fits the laptop bay?

The 1TB SSD is a 2.5" SATA drive, matching the standard bay in this EliteBook 840 G3.

How do I install an operating system on a laptop that ships with no OS, and what is the common mistake?

Create bootable media on another PC, boot from USB, then install Windows or Linux; the step often missed is enabling legacy boot or disabling Secure Boot in BIOS first.

Which memory type and maximum capacity should I plan for when the original 16GB DDR3 needs replacing?

The system uses DDR3 SODIMMs across two slots and supports up to 32 GB total.
