Business laptop with 1 TB NVMe storage

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch business laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-6300U dual-core processor running at 2.4 GHz. It comes with 8 GB of DDR4 memory and a 1 TB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD for fast boot and application loading. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed for professional use. The 1366 x 768 LED display is non-touch and includes a built-in webcam.

Thermals noise and power in daily use

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 uses shared system memory and handles office workloads, web browsing and video playback without a discrete GPU. Typical business tasks keep the cooling system quiet and power draw modest. Connectivity includes Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet, 802.11 wireless, two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 3.1 Type C port, VGA and a full-size DisplayPort for external monitors.

Behaviour under sustained load

Under continuous heavy workloads the dual-core Skylake processor and integrated graphics share the same thermal envelope, so sustained performance will be lower than short bursts. The 8 GB memory limit and shared video memory can become bottlenecks for large datasets or multiple virtual machines. Buyers who need more memory, a discrete GPU or a higher-resolution display should consider other configurations.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 1TB NVMe SSD and what step do people often miss?

Insert the M.2 drive at an angle into the slot, press it flat and secure it with the retention screw; the step often missed is fastening that screw so the drive stays seated.

What maintenance or replacement will the 8GB DDR4 memory need later?

The memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded; if more capacity is required later the only option is replacing the mainboard.

What limit appears first during sustained loads on the Intel HD Graphics 520?

The shared system memory and thermal envelope of the dual-core 2.4 GHz processor throttle the graphics before the GPU hits its own ceiling.
