Business-ready 14 inch laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch business laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-6300U dual-core processor running at 2.4 GHz. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a 1 TB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD. The 1366 x 768 LED display is non-touch. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed.

Ports and expansion for desk or travel

Two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 3.1 Type C port handle peripherals and external storage. A full-size DisplayPort and a VGA port drive external monitors without adapters. Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet and 802.11 b/g/n wireless keep the system connected. A SIM card reader supports mobile broadband where Wi-Fi is unavailable.

Sustained workload behaviour

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 uses shared system memory for video tasks. Under continuous load the dual-core Skylake CPU maintains its base frequency within the ultrabook thermal envelope. The NVMe SSD keeps read and write throughput steady during long file transfers. Fan noise rises gradually as the chassis dissipates heat over extended sessions.

Questions about this item

How long can the i5-6300U sustain its 2.4 GHz speed before the 14.0" chassis forces it to throttle?

The dual-core Skylake chip shares its cooling with Intel HD Graphics 520, so prolonged heavy loads will push temperatures up and the processor will drop below 2.4 GHz to stay within its thermal envelope.

How loud does the fan get and how hot does the base feel after a full day of Windows 10 Pro workloads?

The fan spins up noticeably once the shared heatsink saturates, and the aluminium palm-rest area becomes warm to the touch during continuous use.

Which cables or adapters must I already own to drive an external monitor through the DisplayPort and VGA ports?

You need a full-size DisplayPort cable for the DisplayPort output and a standard VGA cable for the VGA port; the single USB 3.1 Type-C port does not carry video on this model.
