HP EliteBook 840 G3 business laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch business laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-6300U dual-core processor running at 2.4 GHz. It comes with 16GB of DDR4 memory and a 256GB M.2 SATA SSD. The 1366 x 768 HD display uses LED backlighting and is non-touch. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed.

Sustained load behaviour with integrated graphics

Under sustained workloads the Intel HD Graphics 520 relies on shared system memory rather than dedicated video memory. The dual-core processor with 3 MB L3 cache and four threads manages typical office applications and multitasking. Thermal design targets steady performance for business tasks without discrete graphics acceleration.

Practical limits of the connectivity standard

Connectivity includes USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Type-C ports alongside full-size DisplayPort and VGA outputs. Gigabit Ethernet supports 10/100/1000 Mbps wired networks. Wireless uses 802.11 b/g/n or better. The Grade B LCD may show signs of wear such as worn keys or touchpad marks.

Questions about this item

How loud or hot does the i5-6300U get during all-day use?

The dual-core i5-6300U runs at 2.4 GHz with a 3 MB cache and integrated Intel HD Graphics 520, so typical office workloads keep fan noise low and surface temperatures moderate.

Which cables or peripherals must I already own to use the USB 3.1 Type-C and DisplayPort outputs?

You need a USB 3.1 Type-C cable or adapter for the single Type-C port and a standard DisplayPort cable for the full-size DisplayPort; both ports are on the laptop.

Will the 1366 x 768 non-touch panel and VGA port work with my older 1080p monitor and projector?

Yes — the DisplayPort and VGA ports can drive external displays up to their native resolutions, while the built-in 14.0" panel remains at 1366 x 768.
