Business laptop without OS

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch HD laptop driven by an Intel Core i7-6600U dual-core processor at 2.60 GHz with turbo up to 3.40 GHz. It comes with 8GB DDR3 memory and a new 1TB 2.5 inch SATA SSD. No operating system is installed so the buyer adds their own Windows or Linux licence.

Upgrade path from slower storage

The new 1TB SSD replaces a mechanical hard drive and raises sequential read and write speeds for faster boot and application load times. The jump is worth it when the current machine feels sluggish on spinning media and the workload fits within 8GB RAM and integrated Intel HD Graphics 520.

Suits OS-flexible professionals

This unit suits professionals who want a silver business chassis and prefer to supply their own operating system image. Buyers who need a touchscreen, a higher resolution panel, discrete graphics or a pre-installed Windows licence should look at something else.

Questions about this item

What drive bay size does the 1TB SSD use in this EliteBook 840 G3?

The 1TB SSD is a 2.5" SATA drive, so it fits the standard 2.5-inch drive bay inside the chassis.

How do I install an operating system on this laptop when none is included?

Create a bootable USB installer for Windows or Linux, boot from it, and select the 1TB SSD as the target; the step people miss is enabling legacy boot or disabling secure boot in the BIOS first.

Can I add more memory later, and what type does the EliteBook 840 G3 take?

Yes, there are two DDR3 slots supporting up to 32 GB total, so you can add another DDR3 module or replace the existing 8 GB stick.
