Compact USB DVD-RW drive for occasional use

The HP F2B56AA is a silver, slot-load external optical drive that connects through USB 2.0 or 3.0 and draws power from the same port. It reads and writes CD and DVD media, making it a lightweight add-on for laptops or desktops that lack a built-in drive. No separate power adapter is required. The 5.9 inch depth keeps it easy to store or carry.

Suits users with legacy discs.

This drive fits anyone who still needs to install software, play movies, or burn backups on CD-R, CD-RW, DVD±R, or DVD±RW discs across Windows 10 through XP, Windows Server 2003 and 2008, or Mac OS X. Buyers who need Blu-ray read or write capability should look elsewhere. It also does not serve workflows that demand high-speed batch duplication.

USB 2.0 and 3.0 host interface

The single specification that decides compatibility is the USB host interface. The unit operates on any standard USB 2.0 or 3.0 Type-A port, so it works with virtually any modern or legacy PC without driver installation. If your device only offers USB-C, a separate adapter or hub will be required.

Questions about this item

Does the F2B56AA come with a USB cable or do I need to buy one separately?

The drive connects directly to any USB 2.0 or 3.0 port and is powered through that connection, so no separate cable or AC adapter is required.

Should I choose the USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 version of this drive?

The single F2B56AA model works with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports; there is no separate version to select.

What does the 5.9 inch depth mean for fitting the drive on my desk?

The 5.9" depth is the drive's physical length, making it compact enough to sit on a crowded desk or slip into a laptop bag.
