Purpose-built 1U rack server

The HP ProLiant DL160 Gen9 fits a standard 1U rack space and ships with dual Xeon E5-2630 v3 processors, each running at 2.4 GHz with eight cores. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory are installed across the 16 available DIMM slots. The B140i software RAID controller supports SATA drives in RAID 0, 1 or 5 across the eight 2.5-inch small-form-factor bays.

Thermals, noise and power draw

Redundant hot-swap 550 W power supplies share the load and keep the system running if one unit fails. The 1U chassis uses internal fans that ramp speed based on inlet temperature and CPU utilisation. Under typical mixed workloads the power draw stays well within the 550 W capacity while fan noise remains consistent with other 1U rackmount servers in a cooled data-centre aisle.

Behaviour under sustained load

Both processors can maintain their 2.4 GHz base frequency across all 16 physical cores during extended compute tasks thanks to the thermal design and dual power supplies. Hyper-threading presents 32 logical threads to the operating system for parallel workloads. Memory bandwidth scales with the populated DIMM slots up to the 2400 MT/s limit of the installed DDR4 modules. The Matrox G200 graphics controller with 16 MB video memory handles only basic console output.

Questions about this item

How do I install drives in the 8 SFF bays and which step is often missed?

Insert each 2.5-inch drive into its tray, secure the supplied screws, then slide the tray into a bay until it clicks; the step often missed is seating the tray fully so the backplane connector engages.

What maintenance will the B140i software RAID need later?

Monitor array health in the OS or iLO, replace any failed SATA drive promptly and rebuild the RAID 0, 1 or 5 volume; no separate controller firmware updates are required.

What limit appears first during sustained heavy compute on the dual E5-2630 v3 CPUs?

The 550 W power supply caps total system draw, so prolonged full-load operation on all 16 cores per processor will hit the power budget before thermal limits.
