1U rack server with single Xeon E5-2630 v3

The HP ProLiant DL160 Gen9 is a 1U rack server built for balanced compute density. It ships with one eight-core Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 processor running at 2.4GHz and 64GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 16 DIMM slots. Two 1TB 7.2K SATA drives sit in the eight-bay SFF chassis, managed by the B140i software RAID controller supporting levels 0, 1 and 5. A 550W redundant hot-swap power supply is included.

Suits single-socket workloads needing SATA RAID

This configuration fits environments that run virtualisation, web hosting or general-purpose applications on a single processor with software RAID on SATA media. The eight 2.5-inch bays allow additional SATA drives to be added later. Buyers who need hardware RAID, SAS connectivity or a second CPU installed from the start should look at alternative configurations. The Matrox G200 graphics provides basic console output only.

B140i software RAID limits storage to SATA

The onboard B140i controller supports RAID 0, 1 and 5 exclusively on SATA drives. It does not support SAS or other drive interfaces. If the deployment requires hardware RAID acceleration, SAS drive support or a different RAID level, this server will not meet that requirement without adding a supported controller card.

Questions about this item

With a single E5-2630 v3 at 2.4 GHz and 8 cores, how much compute capacity does this server deliver out of the box?

The installed processor provides eight physical cores at 2.4 GHz with hyper-threading for 16 logical threads, handling virtualization, databases and general-purpose workloads.

The B140i controller lists RAID 0, 1 and 5 — does it support SAS drives or only SATA?

The B140i is a SATA-only software RAID controller, so it manages the two installed 1 TB SATA drives and any additional SATA devices in the eight SFF bays.

Will this 1U chassis accept full-height expansion cards, or is it limited to low-profile?

As a 1U rack server the chassis only accommodates low-profile cards; full-height cards will not fit.
