Compact dual-socket server for dense racks

The HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9 fits a dual Intel Xeon E5-2640 v3 configuration into a 1U chassis, delivering 16 physical cores and 32 threads at 2.6 GHz. It targets workloads that need high core density in minimal rack space, such as virtualisation hosts or database nodes. The 24 DDR4 slots support up to 3 TB of ECC registered memory, though only 16 GB is installed initially.

Redundant power and hot-swap cooling

Two 500 W hot-swap power supplies provide full redundancy without shutting down the system. Eight 2.5-inch SAS drive bays accept 15 K rpm drives that generate significant heat, so the chassis uses multiple high-speed fans that become audible under sustained load. Power draw scales with both CPU utilisation and the number of spinning drives installed.

H240ar controller enables hardware RAID

The Smart HBA H240ar adds 12 Gb SAS and 6 Gb SATA connectivity with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, offloading parity calculations from the CPUs. Two 600 GB 15 K SAS drives are included, offering fast sequential throughput for operating system or scratch volumes. The Matrox G200 graphics provides only basic console output, so a discrete GPU is required for any graphical workload.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5-inch SAS drives into the 8 SFF bays, and what step is often missed?

Slide each drive into a bay until the latch clicks, then verify the H240ar controller detects both 600 GB 15K drives in the RAID utility before loading an OS.

Which components will need replacement first during long-term operation?

The two 500 W redundant power supplies and the 15K SAS drives are the primary field-replaceable units; fans and DIMMs can also be swapped hot.

What limit appears first when the dual E5-2640 v3 CPUs run sustained workloads?

The 16 GB installed DDR4 across 24 slots caps memory capacity, and the 6 Gbps SAS link bounds storage throughput before CPU cores saturate.
