What this product is and who it is for

The Aruba R9D17A is a new SFP transceiver that adds a single RJ-45 copper port to compatible network switches. It targets administrators who need a short Gigabit Ethernet link over existing Category 5e cabling without deploying fibre.

The specification that decides fit

This module supports 1000Base-T operation up to 100 metres or 328.08 feet on Category 5e twisted-pair cable. If the link budget or distance requirement exceeds that figure, a different transceiver type is required.

How it fits into a build

The hot-pluggable SFP form factor slides into an open SFP slot on a supported switch, freeing the corresponding fibre port for other uses. It draws power directly from the host device and needs no external supply or configuration beyond the copper patch cord.

Questions about this item

What does the 1Gbps rating mean once the transceiver is installed in a switch?

It provides a single 1000Base-T port that runs at gigabit speed over twisted-pair copper, limited to 100 metres on Category 5e cable.

Which SFP interface standard does the module use and what does it cap?

The module follows the SFP mini-GBIC form factor with an RJ-45 connector, capping the link at 1000Base-T gigabit Ethernet over copper.

What physical slot and clearance does the transceiver need to fit?

It fits any standard SFP cage measuring 0.5 inches high, 0.6 inches wide and 2.8 inches deep, weighing approximately 0.10 lb.
