OCP NIC 3.0 storage controller with 2x8 LP SlimSAS ports supporting RAID 0, 1, 10 and 6G SATA, 12G SAS, 16G NVMe drives
The HPE P47789-B21 is a storage controller built to the OCP NIC 3.0 form factor for server deployments. It connects drives through two 8-lane LP SlimSAS ports. The adapter supports 6G SATA, 12G SAS and 16G NVMe protocols. No onboard cache is included with this model.
This controller suits administrators who need RAID 0, 1 or 10 across mixed SATA, SAS and NVMe drives. It also supports secure encrypted drives for data-at-rest protection. Builds requiring RAID 5, 6 or higher levels must select a different controller. Environments that depend on hardware-backed write caching should consider other models.
The card is managed through MRSA, StorCLI, UEFI and Redfish interfaces. These tools cover configuration, monitoring and firmware updates across supported operating systems. Deployments that rely on a proprietary GUI not listed here will need an alternative solution.

Align the controller with the OCP NIC 3.0 connector and seat it firmly until the latch clicks; the step often missed is attaching the 2x8 LP SlimSAS cables to the correct drive backplane ports before closing the chassis.
Since the MR216i-o has no cache module, there is no battery or capacitor to replace; only firmware updates via MRSA, StorCLI, UEFI or Redfish are required for ongoing maintenance.
The 6 Gbps SATA link saturates before the 12 Gbps SAS or 16 Gbps NVMe paths, making SATA drives the first bottleneck under continuous heavy I/O.
