Adds 56 Kbps analogue dial-up connectivity to a ThinkPad 600X via an internal Mini PCI slot
The IBM 27L4988 is a 56 Kbps analog modem on a Mini PCI card designed for ThinkPad 600X series notebooks. It provides dial-up connectivity through an internal slot without using a PC Card bay or external adapter. Buyers restoring or maintaining a 600X system gain a factory-style connection option. It is not for laptops lacking a Mini PCI modem socket.
Replacing an external serial modem or a PC Card modem frees a port and removes a protruding card. The jump is worth it when the 600X has a vacant Mini PCI modem slot and the user prefers an internal, tidy installation. If the system already has an internal Mini PCI modem fitted, this card adds no benefit.
The card installs directly into the dedicated Mini PCI modem connector inside the ThinkPad 600X chassis. No extra cabling or drivers beyond standard analog modem support are required. It leaves PC Card slots and serial ports available for other peripherals. Systems without the specific Mini PCI modem interface cannot accept this card.

Yes, the card uses the Mini PCI interface and is made for the ThinkPad 600X series internal modem bay.
They forget to seat the Mini PCI connector fully and secure the retaining screw before closing the chassis.
Replace it when the line no longer trains at 56 Kbps or the card reports persistent connection errors.
