IBM 81Y9787 500Gb Sata Switch Module

The IBM 81Y9787 is a 500Gb 7200Rpm Sata 3.5Inch switch module designed for hot-swap storage expansion in compatible IBM systems. It serves administrators who need reliable nearline capacity within a standard drive bay. The included tray allows immediate insertion without extra mounting hardware. This module suits environments that prioritise straightforward drive replacement.

Hot-swap tray eases installation in supported bays

Installation consists of sliding the supplied tray into a matching 3.5Inch hot-swap bay until the connector seats firmly. No tools or separate cabling are required because power and data connect through the backplane. The most common issue is inserting the module into a bay or controller that does not support 6Gbps Sata signalling, which prevents the drive from being recognised. Verifying system compatibility before fitting the unit avoids this problem.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the 500 Gb 7200 Rpm Sata drive is operating correctly after installing it in the hot-swap tray?

The system BIOS or RAID controller should detect the IBM 81Y9787 at its full 500 Gb capacity and report a Sata 6 Gbps link speed with no SMART errors.

Does the 3.5 inch hot-swap tray ship attached to the drive or must I order it separately?

The tray is included with the 81Y9787; the supplier description lists the drive with tray as a single unit so no extra tray purchase is needed.
