Desktop two-bay SATA enclosure

The iStarUSA VAGE220-UF-RF is a refurbished desktop enclosure that holds two 3.5-inch SATA I/II drives in hot-swap trays. It connects to a host through USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394B interfaces. The aluminium and plastic housing includes a built-in 40 mm fan with thermal speed control.

RAID 0, 1 or JBOD selectable

The internal backplane supports RAID 0, RAID 1 and JBOD modes so the two drives can be striped, mirrored or used independently. Green and blue LEDs show power status and drive activity for each bay. The unit is operating-system independent and includes a key lock on each tray.

Sustained operation with external power

An external power adapter supplies 5 V at 2 A and 12 V at 2 A from a 100-240 V AC input at 50-60 Hz. The thermo-controlled fan adjusts speed to maintain airflow during continuous read or write workloads. The compact chassis measures 2.56 by 4.72 by 9.06 inches.

Questions about this item

How does the 800 Mbps FireWire 800 link affect real-world throughput?

The FireWire 800 host interface caps at 800 Mbps, so sustained transfers cannot exceed that bus limit even though the SATA I/II drives support higher internal rates.

What host interfaces does the enclosure use and what speeds do they provide?

It connects via USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps and IEEE 1394B FireWire 800 at 800 Mbps; both are shared host links to the two drive bays.

What physical space and drive size does the unit require?

The desktop enclosure measures 2.56 x 4.72 x 9.06 inches and accepts two 3.5 inch SATA drives in the supplied removable trays.
