Optical S/PDIF Interface Constraints

The optical S/PDIF connection carries uncompressed PCM stereo and compressed 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 surround formats including Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD. It does not have the bandwidth for uncompressed multichannel PCM, Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio, so those formats must be decoded to PCM or bitstreamed in a supported compressed format by the source device.
