Tiny business desktop

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M83 (10E9000SUS) is a Tiny form-factor desktop built for office environments. It ships with an Intel Core i5-4590T quad-core processor running at 2.0 GHz, 4 GB of DDR3L 1600 memory and a 500 GB SATA hard drive spinning at 7200 rpm. Windows 8.1 Pro is pre-installed with downgrade rights to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 handles display output.

Sustained load behaviour

The 65 W power supply and low-power i5-4590T CPU are designed for steady business workloads rather than peak bursts. Under continuous multi-threaded tasks the processor will operate within its thermal envelope while the single 3.5-inch drive and integrated graphics share the modest power budget. Memory bandwidth is limited to the DDR3L 1600 specification and the two SO-DIMM slots cap total RAM at 16 GB.

Pre-order checklist

Verify that your monitors use a video interface supported by the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 outputs on this Tiny chassis. Confirm the 65 W external adapter meets your local voltage and plug requirements. The system includes 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN and Gigabit Ethernet for network connectivity. Buyers needing more than 16 GB of RAM or faster storage interfaces should consider a different platform.

Questions about this item

How loud does the 65 W power supply and i5-4590T get when the Tiny runs all day?

The 65 W supply is sized for the i5-4590T and integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600; under typical business loads the fan stays at low speed and noise remains at office background level.

What must I already own to use this Tiny desktop since it has no screen?

You need a display with VGA, DisplayPort or HDMI input plus a USB keyboard and mouse; the system includes Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n wireless for network connection.

Can the DDR3L 1600 memory and SATA 7200 RPM drive work with older DDR3 or SATA II components I might keep?

The two DDR3L slots accept up to 16 GB of DDR3L 1600 modules; the SATA 7200 RPM drive is backward compatible with SATA II ports, so older drives can be added as secondary storage.
