14-inch ThinkPad for mobile professionals

The Lenovo ThinkPad T470 pairs a 14.0-inch HD display with an Intel Core i7-6600U dual-core processor, 32GB DDR4 memory and a new 240GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. Windows 10 Home 64-bit is pre-installed. The compact chassis suits commuters, remote workers and students who need a durable business laptop with ample RAM for multitasking.

Upgrade from slower storage or less memory

Replacing a traditional hard drive with the new NVMe SSD cuts boot and application load times dramatically. The 32GB DDR4 ceiling is already maxed out, so the jump is worthwhile when your current machine stutters with many browser tabs, virtual machines or large spreadsheets open. Buyers who want more storage capacity or a higher-resolution screen should look elsewhere.

Straightforward SSD and memory access

The M.2 slot and two SO-DIMM sockets are reachable after removing the bottom cover, so the pre-installed 240GB drive and 32GB kit are user-serviceable. Common pitfalls include forgetting to disable the internal battery in BIOS before opening the case and using a drive that is not NVMe PCIe, which the slot does not support.

Questions about this item

Does the 14.0 inch chassis use a 2.5 inch bay or an M.2 slot for the 240GB SSD?

The 240GB SSD uses an M.2 NVMe PCIe slot; there is no 2.5 inch drive bay in this model.

How is the 32GB DDR4 memory installed and what mistake should I avoid?

Both memory slots are populated to reach the 32GB maximum; do not buy extra modules expecting a free slot.

When will the 240GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD likely need replacement?

Replace the SSD when its health monitoring tools report wear or if you need more than 240GB of capacity.
